The Synthetic Glasshouse is an electroacoustic work inspired by Australian artist Lilli Waters’ image In Dreams (pictured, right). The piece imagines the sound world of the fish as it moves from being motionless to trying to escape from the plastic bag. It is a sonic collage of light, colour and texture. I was particularly captured by the colours on the fish and the light that comes from behind its find. The music reflects the immense beauty of the fish, as well as the reality that this fish is trapped.
The title The Synthetic Glasshouse implies two meanings: the first the beauty and wonder as light filters through the glass; the scond darker side – the fish’s plastic prison, the ‘glasshouse‘.
